Tackling Food Waste in Southern Europe: Meet the Food Connect project

Food waste remains a critical issue across the European Union, carrying significant environmental, social, and economic consequences. According to EUROSTAT data from 2023, the EU average for food waste was approximately 131 kilograms per capita, though levels vary significantly among member states.
At the top of the list, Cyprus generated 294 kilograms of waste per person, more than twice the EU average. Denmark followed with 254 kg, while Portugal reported 187 kg per capita and Malta 143 kg. These figures underscore the urgency of addressing food waste across the EU, particularly in Southern Europe.
Across Europe, food waste constitutes a major component of municipal waste, with estimates suggesting that up to 20% of all food produced in the EU is lost or wasted.

How FOOD CONNECT addresses these challenges?

To address these challenges, the new European project "FoodConnect" has been launched. Building on the achievements of the previous “LIFE FoodPrint” initiative, FoodConnect aims to combat food waste, promote food donations, and enhance public awareness. Central to the project is the development and expansion of the FOODPRINT platform, which encourages community involvement in food collection and donation efforts.
The initiative also seeks to foster collaboration among businesses, public institutions, and civil society across Cyprus, Malta, and Portugal. Key stakeholders include the hospitality and food service sectors, agricultural organizations, and social support groups.

1st Transnational Project Meeting

FoodConnect commenced in September 2024 and will run until March 2027. It is co-funded by the European Life Programme and coordinated by the DIAS Group, in partnership with Friends of the Earth Malta, Friends of the Earth Cyprus, Base Element (Cyprus), ZERO (Portugal), and INOVA+ (Portugal).
The first project meeting took place on October 16–17, 2024, at the DIAS Group headquarters, bringing all partners together to align on the project's structure, goals, and the first year of activities.

Planned activities include a wide-reaching public awareness campaign focused on the environmental and social impacts of food waste and the benefits of food donation. In parallel, targeted research and stakeholder consultations will be conducted with businesses, professionals, and community groups.
Ultimately, the project seeks to build a holistic, collaborative approach to food waste reduction across Southern Europe, encouraging citizens and organizations alike to engage in responsible consumption and donation practices through the enhanced FOODPRINT platform.
