The Food Connect project

Save Food. Waste Less

Description

What is Food-Connect?
Food-Connect is an EU-funded project (Project No: 101148772) by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under LIFE Programme – Programme for the Environment and Climate Action that started on September 2024 and will be completed by March 2027. The project is dedicated to fighting food waste and promoting food donation by scaling and expanding an innovative digital platform 'FOODPRINT (https://www.foodprintcy.eu/). It builds on the foundations of the successful LIFE FoodPrint project by upgrading the Collaboration Network Platform developed in Cyprus—a digital tool that links food donors with receivers—to make it more effective, engaging, and accessible.

The project aims to strengthen this platform both technically and strategically, while testing its application in Cyprus, Malta and Portugal. It will also raise awareness and encourage action across Europe on the social, environmental, and economic impact of food waste.

Description

Main objectives

Scale Up the Existing Platform
Enhance the technical infrastructure and add new features to the current platform, improving user experience and attracting more users. A core focus is developing outreach campaigns and engagement strategies to involve more businesses, social operators, and stakeholders.

Pilot Replication in Cyprus, Malta and Portugal
Deploy the Food-Connect platform prototype in two pilot regions, testing its effectiveness, gathering feedback, and adapting the tool to local needs. This will allow the team to validate the model and build a strategy for wider replication.

Raise Awareness and Drive Change
Conduct public campaigns and educational activities to spotlight the importance of food donation and the societal implications of food waste, targeting consumers, the food and hospitality sector, and relevant institutions.

Target Groups

Direct Target Groups:
- Food Donors: Businesses in the food and hospitality sector, agricultural producers, civil society organisations (CSOs), food banks, municipalities, and public bodies.
- Food Receivers: Individuals in need, NGOs, grassroots initiatives, CSOs involved in food distribution.

Indirect Target Groups:
- Consumers and the general public.
- Policymakers and public institutions.
- Scientific and academic communities.
- Broader stakeholder networks across Europe.

Why It Matters

Each year, millions of tons of food go to waste while many individuals and families face food insecurity. Food-Connect aims to bridge this gap by making it easier for food to reach those who need it—supporting environmental sustainability, social solidarity, and the circular economy. This project offers a practical, tech-driven solution while advocating for lasting change at local and EU levels.
